Five matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Cricket Tournament 2018/19 were conducted today around the island.

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs St. Aloysius College, Galle

The Group C fixture between St. Sebastian’s College and St. Aloysius College commenced today at St. Sebastian’s College grounds in Moratuwa. The St. Sebastian’s College skipper Nuwanindu Fernando won the toss and opted to bowl first in their own backyard. The visitors got off to a poor start as right arm seamer Tashik Perera struck early to dismiss Harshana Udugampola when the score was at 7.

The skipper Gimhana Ashirwada and Ravindu Kanchana then built a 88-run partnership for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed by off spinner Nuwanindu Fernando for 31 runs. In the very next over, skipper Gimhana Ashirwada threw his wicket away for 47 runs with 5 fours and 1 six. After their dismissals, the visitors continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 186 runs after being 95 for 1 at one stage.

Vinuja Ranasinghe, the highest wicket taker for St. Sebastian’s College this season was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 36 runs for 3 wickets in 19.3 overs. In reply, the hosts did not get a good start either as they lost both openers for 36 runs in 8.3 overs. However, skipper Nuwanindu Fernando who has represented Sri Lanka U19 in recent times, built a 92-run partnership with left handed Sukitha Prasanna for the third wicket.

Nuwanindu Fernando was in a hurry as he smashed all over the ground and reached his half-century in 27 balls. Niduka Malsith picked up Fernando’s wicket in the 29th over for 83 runs which came off 55 balls. He scored 9 fours and 6 massive sixes and was going at a strike rate of 151. Niduka Malsith was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as he picked up all the wickets which fell.

  2. Thomas’ College managed to record a history making innings victory against Ananda College today at Ananda College grounds. After being 19 runs for 1 wicket overnight, the hosts were bundled out for just 114 runs for their first innings. Left arm seamer Kalana Perera starred with the ball picking up 4 wickets for the Thomians.

Ananda College batsmen began their second innings trailing by 240 runs and failed with the bat again as they were bowled out for 145 runs with Shannon Fernando starring with the ball for S. Thomas’ College taking 4 scalps for 40 runs. With this victory, S. Thomas’ College managed to defeat Ananda College after 43 years and the last time it was done in 1976 under the captaincy of Shashi Ganeshan at Mount Lavinia.

Mahinda College dominated the first day’s play in their traditional encounter against Presidents College which commenced today at Mahinda College grounds in Galle. Ashen Kandamy (93) and Kaveesha Malliyawadu (93) stroked half-tons guiding Mahinda College to post 326 runs for 9 wickets. In reply, the lads from Kotte were struggling with the bat as they finished day one on 59 runs for 5 wickets.

The traditional fixture between Gurukula College and St. Servatius College got underway today at Uyanwaththa grounds in Matara. After winning the toss, the St. Servatius College skipper chose to bat first and posted 206 runs with Shashika Dulshan top scoring with a knock of 99 runs. In reply, the lads from Kelaniya showed a very poor batting display as they were bundled out for just 30 runs.

Charith Harshana and Pasindu Manupriya starred with the ball for the Matara boys sharing 9 wickets between themselves. St. Servatius College decided to bat again without enforcing the follow-on and ended first day’s play at 35 runs for 1 wicket.

The group C fixture between St. Joseph Vaz College and St. Mary’s College commenced today at St. Sebastian’s grounds in Katuneriya. After being put into bat first, Joseph Vaz batsmen put on a solid performance with the bat scoring 281 runs. Chamodh Fernando (52) and Yohan Maduwantha (51) stroked half-tons for the Vazians.

In reply, the St. Mary’s College batsmen set a good foundation to their first innings scoring 60 runs for no wicket at close of play on day one.
