Left handed opening batsmen, Sandun Weerakkody (NCC) and Sithara Gimhan (Tamil Union) struck classy centuries in the SLC Premier League ‘Tier A’ Tournament 2016/17 on Friday as six matches were conducted today.

Tamil Union vs Galle

Former Richmondite, Sithara Gimhan slammed his maiden first-class century as Tamil Union made a hefty reply against Galle CC on day two in their Group A match at P. Sara Oval Grounds.

After resuming from 247 for 4, the visitors were bundled out for 352 by the defending champions. Leg-spinner Jeewan Mendis grabbed 4 for 87 while fast-bowler Chamika Karunarathne took 3 for 80. Apart of Dilhan Cooray’s 86, former Benedictine Eranga Rathnayake scored 62 off 103 balls.

In reply, the hosts ended day two on 228 for just one wicket. Gimhan cracked 9 fours and a six during his unbeaten 182-ball 104 while experienced Tharanga Paranavithana made 10 fours to accumulate 81 runs not out.

Galle – 352 all out in 111.3 overs: Nilushan Nonis 34, Dilhan Cooray 86, Shalika Karunanayake 45, Eranga Rathnayake 62, Chamika Karunarathne 3/80, Dulanjana Mendis 2/66, Jeewan Mendis 4/87.

NCC vs Chilaw Marians

Sri Lanka A opening batsman, Sandun Weerakkody cracked his 4th first-class century as NCC piled up 385 on day one against Chilaw Marians at Maitland Place.

After opting to bat, the dashing opening duo of Niroshan Dickwella and Sandun Weerakkody raced to 114 from 15.4 overs before the former was undone for 51. Weerakkody bisected the field to collect 13 fours and cleaned the ropes twice during his 122-ball 113.

Pawan Wickramasinghe and Angelo Perera made 46 and 45 respectively while former Anthonian Nimesh Gunasinghe made an important 64 down the order. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara took yet another five-wicket haul for the visitors.

Bloomfield vs Badureliya

Left-arm spinner Malith Mahela and off-spinner Taneesha Weerakoon bamboozled the Badureliya batting on day one as Bloomfield took command in their Group A match at Reid Avenue.

Mahela picked up his second five-wicket haul in as many games while former Peterite, Weerakoon making his first-class debut took 3 scalps as the visitors were cleaned up for just 156 runs. In reply, Adeesha Nanayakkara and Captain Nipun Karunanayake made unbeaten 54 and 47 respectively to steer the home team score to 134 for 3 at stumps.

Badureliya – 156 all out in 51 overs: Shehan Fernando 46, Vishwa Wijerathne 47, Sachin Hewawasam 26, Malith Mahela 5/41, Taneesha Weerakoon 3/24.

Bloomfield 134/3 in 33 overs: Adeesha Nanayakkara 54*, Nipun Karunanayake 47*, Dilesh Gunarathne 2/47.


Saracens vs BRC

Saracens managed to post 302 on day one despite veteran BRC spinner Dinuka Hettiarachchi’s 60th five-wicket haul in their Group B encounter at BRC grounds.

Saracens innings was propelled by three half-centuries by Irosh Samarasooriya, Umesh Karunarathne and Denuwan Rajakaruna. Hettiarachchi gave away 96 runs for his five wickets while off-spinner TM Sampath grabbed 3 scalps. In reply the hosts were 23 for no loss at close of play.

Saracens – 302 all out in 79.5 overs: Irosh Samarasooriya 72, Umesh Karunarathne 84, Denuwan Rajakaruna 69, Chathura Randunu 28, Dinuka Hettiarachchi 5/96, Andy Solomons 2/25, TM Sampath 3/64.

BRC – 23 for no loss in 6 overs: Lisula Lakshan 13*, Deshan Dias 10*.


Ragama vs Moors

Ragama CC took upper hand on day one in their Group B encounter against Moors SC at Braybrooke Place.

Left-arm spin duo, Amila Aponso and Sahan Nanayakkara shared 7 wickets to dismiss the hosts to 217 after Kosala Kulasekara won the toss and elected to bat. Opening batsman Primosh Perera top scored for the home team with a fine 64 while Shanuka Dulaj contributed 36 valuable runs.

Sri Lanka Army and Colombo Cricket Club shared honours on day one in their crucial Group B match at CCC grounds.

After opting to bat first, the home team was bowled out for just 218 by a disciplined bowling display by the Soldiers. Sachith Pathirana and Lahiru Madushanka made fighting half-tons while Sri Lanka Test discard, Asela Gunarathne and off-spinner Dushan Vimukthi picked up 3 scalps each. The visitors were 92 for 3 at stumps with Vimukthi unbeaten at the crease on 45.
