A quarter final encounter of Under 19 Schools Limited over tournament and two traditional cricket encounters took place yesterday where the unbeaten St. Peter’s College escaped for a narrow win to book their semi final spot, Gurukula College and Lumbini College settled for a draw and S. Thomas’ College completely dominated Isipathana College.

In a tier B quarter final fixture which worked off at the D.S Senanayake grounds, St. Peter’s the unbeaten group toppers in round 1 faced Devapathiraja College. The encounter was derailed due to rain early in the day and with clear skies the umpires decided to start the match as a 27 over game. St. Peter’s College who batted first had a tough time as the Devapathiraja bowlers always managed to keep the scoring rate down and take regular wickets. At the end of their allotted 27 overs, Peterites could only manage 122 runs after losing 9 wickets. Kavika Jayasundara and Rusanda Gamage were the top scorers with 27 and 24 runs respectively. Irushika Thimira was the pick of the bowlers for Devapathiraja taking 3 wickets while Chaminda Sandaruwan took 2.

Chasing a modest target of 123, Devapathiraja batters started off strongly. At one point they were 68 for 4 after just 11 overs needing 55 more runs in 16 overs. But the Peterite star spinner Shenon Rodrigo and skipper Nimuthu Gunawardene destroyed hopes of an upset for Devapathiraja dismantling the lower top order and the tail to register a thrilling 10 run victory. Pawan Sandesh top scored for Devapathiraja scoring 35 while Rodrigo took 3 for 31 and Gunawardene took 2 for 18.

In the first two day encounter of the day, Gurukula College and Lumbini College ended their encounter as a draw where Lumbini College won the first innings. In the other two day fixture, S. Thomas’ College bowlers manhandled the Isipathana batters to dismiss them for just 31 runs and followed it up with a fantastic batting performance to end day one and they will be eyeing for an outright win on day 2.
