St. Sebastian’s College beat Prince of Wales College by 16 runs in the 37th Battle of the Golds One Day encounter worked off today (29th October) at SSC Grounds in Colombo.

Prince of Wales College skipper Tharindu Amarasingha won the toss and invited St. Sebastian’s College to bat first.

Savindu Rodrigo and the skipper Bihanga Mendis opened the batting for St. Sebastian’s College but couldn’t get off to a good start as the former was dismissed for just 6 runs in the 7th over of the innings.

However, Mendis and No. 3 batter Yashan Avishka rebuilt the innings putting on a 61-run partnership for the 2nd wicket. After their dismissals, St. Sebastian’s College witnessed a mini-collapse in the middle order but Sandeesh Fernando’s fighting half-century took them to a competitive score of 227/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

In reply, Prince of Wales College got off to an excellent start as their opening pair Tharindu Amarasingha and Rivith Jayasuriya put on a 52-run partnership for the first wicket. Another 50+ partnership between Amarasingha and Ashen Shanaka for the 3rd wicket put them well on course for the target but a flurry of wickets in the middle order changed the game in favor of St. Sebastian’s College.

The skipper Amarasinghe tried his best to put his side over the line with a brilliant century but it wasn’t enough for the Cambrians as they fell 16 runs short of the target at the end. Amarasingha was brilliant with the bat as he scored 103 runs off 135 balls with 6 fours.
