The 72nd Battle of the Golds annual encounter played between Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian’s College ended in a draw today (28th October) at De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa.

St. Sebastian’s College resumed day two on 120 runs for 6 wickets and added another 38 runs to the scoreboard before declaring their innings at 158/8 with a 9-run first-innings lead.

St. Sebastian’s College opening batter Ryan Dissanayake was the top scorer for his team as he made 55 runs off 135 balls with 3 fours while Prince Fernando stole the limelight with the ball taking 4 wickets for 43 runs for Prince of Wales College.

Prince of Wales College began their second innings 9 runs behind and got off to a shaky start losing the first 4 wickets for 52 runs. However, Ashen Shanaka and Sumalka Fernando rescued the Cambrian innings adding 80 runs for the 5th wicket before the former was bowled by the off-spinner Sandeesh Fernando for 34 runs.

Fernando continued to dominate Sebastian bowlers scoring an eye-catching half-century for Prince of Wales College. He made 68 runs off 79 balls with 6 fours and a six as Cambrians declared their innings at 186/9 setting a target of 178 runs for the opposition.

Fernando who picked up a 4-wicket haul in the first innings once again stood up with the ball for St. Sebastian’s College picking up 5 wickets for 78 runs.

Chasing 178 runs in 19 overs left in the day was a very tough ask for St. Sebastian’s College but they showed much better application with the bat compared to their first innings, putting on 103 runs for 2 wickets at the close of play on the final day.

St. Sebastian’s College No. 3 batter Mahen Silva stroked a brisk half-century adding 58 runs off 49 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 118.37.
