Devapathiraja College and Mahinda College qualified for the Semi-Finals of U19 Schools Tier B Limited Over Cricket Tournament as they defeated Isipathana College and St. Joseph Vaz College respectively in the Quarter-Final encounters worked off today (22nd April) at Colombo and Moratuwa.

Isipathana College won the toss and chose to bat first but things didn’t go as planned as they were bundled out for just 151 runs in 39.5 overs. Irushika Thimira (3/28), Sasanka Nirmal (2/21) and Sudeera Weerarathna (2/24) bowled well as a group sharing 7 wickets among them.  

Devapathiraja batsmen chased down the target with ease in the 44th over with 6 wickets in hand. The skipper Jeewaka Shasheen led from the front with the bat scoring unbeaten 56 runs off 85 balls including 3 fours and a six.

Mahinda College, Galle vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa  

Quarter-final encounter held between Mahinda College and St. Joseph Vaz College was reduced to a 43-over affair as the rain interrupted the play at Moratuwa. Having won the toss, the lads from South got off to a shaky start losing 2 quick wickets for 27 runs in the first 8 overs.

However, seasoned campaigner Navod Paranavithana didn’t panic as he used all his experience to build a 78-run partnership with number 4 batsman Subanu Rajapaksha for the 3rd wicket. 

Paranavithana made 62 runs off 71 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes while Rajapaksha scored the same amount of runs off 87 balls with 5 fours. However, it was Dhanuja Induwara’s blistering innings that came at the right time and gave the much-needed impetus for Mahinda College as he smashed 73 runs off 32 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes. 

Even with the ball, Mahinda College showed a dominating performance as they managed to restrict the opposition for just 121 runs and secured their place in the Semi-Finals.  Kavidu Lakshan, Subanu Rajapaksha, Navod Paranavithana and Kushan Madusha picked up 2 wickets each.

Kingswood College, Kandy vs Maris Stella College, Negombo  

The traditional encounter between Kingswood College and Maris Stella College commenced today (22nd April) at Dambulla. At the end of the first day’s play, the match was evenly poised as Maris Stella put on 80 for 3 in reply to the score of 205 made by Kingswood College for their first innings. 

Priysan Silva who picked up 6 scalps for 48 runs representing Maris Stella College was the star of the day from both sides.

The 121st Battle of the Blues played between St. Servatius College and St. Thomas College commenced today (22nd April) at Hambantota. After been put in to bat first, St. Servatius College posted 253 runs on the board with Kushan Wijerathne top-scoring with 70 runs off 143 balls with 8 fours.    

Hirusha Jeewadith and Sineth Dissanayake starred with the ball for Thomians taking 3 wickets each. The match will continue tomorrow (23rd April) for day two.
