Sineth Dissanayake takes 11 as St. Thomas defeat St. Mary’s

St. Thomas College, Matara registered a comprehensive 170-run victory over St. Mary’s College, Kegalle in their traditional encounter of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Two Day Cricket Tournament 2019/20 which was worked off today (12th March) at Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara.

St. Thomas College dominated the first day’s progress applying pressure on St. Mary’s College with the ball. They resumed day two on 67 runs for 3 wickets leading 164 runs with 7 wickets in hand but declared the innings adding 67 more runs to the overnight score. 

Hirusha Jeewadith top-scored with an unbeaten half-century while Woshitha Amarasinghe chipped in with 26 runs for the lads from Matara. Sineth Ishan, who impressed with the ball in the first innings taking a 4-wicket haul, also picked up 3 more wickets in the second innings for 51 runs taking his match tally into 7 wickets for 87 runs.

After failing miserably with the bat in the first innings, the target of 232 runs to win the match was far from reach for St. Mary’s College. As expected, they once again failed with the bat posting only 61 runs in 23.4 overs. Sineth Dissanayake, who picked up 3 wickets in the first innings improved his figures in the second innings picking up 8 wickets for 19 runs.

The 17-year old left-arm spinner Sineth Dissanayake’s match tally stood at 11 wickets for 31 runs. In addition, the off-spinner Sachira Rashmika who was the pick of the bowlers for St. Thomas in the first innings, picked up 2 more wickets for no runs, taking his match tally into 6 wickets for 7 runs.
