St. Anthony’s and St. Joseph Vaz crowned U15 joint champions

St. Anthony’s College, Kandy and St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennapuwa were adjudged joint champions of the Singer Under ’15 Division 1’ Schools Cricket tournament as the prevailing weather conditions hampered the play in the final which was worked off today in Colombo.

Menusha Perera, the skipper of St. Joseph Vaz College won the toss and invited the opposition to bat first under gloomy conditions at Thurstan College Grounds in Colombo. The Anontians batted for 45 overs and put 166 runs for 5 wickets before declaring their innings. 

Lahiru Abeysinghe, the skipper of St. Anthony’s College played a captains’ knock scoring 63 runs while Mohammed Aakhil assisted him with a valuable knock of 40 runs. Seth Ransitha was the pick of the bowlers for St. Joseph Vaz College as he took 3 scalps for 33 runs while the skipper Menusha Perera starred with the ball picking up 2 wickets for 19 runs. 

In reply, St. Joseph Vaz College posted 35 runs for 3 wickets in 28 overs when the umpires called stumps due to bad light. As the match ended without a result, the organizers decided to declare St. Anthony’s College and St. Joseph Vaz College joint champions. Interestingly, there were joint champions in the last year’s U15 final as well with St. Sebastian’s College and Royal College being crowned joint champions due to poor weather conditions.

On their way to the final, St. Joseph Vaz College remained unbeaten in the first 3 rounds and qualified to the quarter final defeating Maris Stella College, Negombo. In the quarter final match, they defeated St. Servatius College, Matara on bonus points and met Mahinda College, Galle in the semi final encounter. 

On the other hand, St. Anthony’s College qualified to the third round in a comprehensive manner finishing top in their respective groups in each round. The Antonians qualified for the quarter final defeating last years’ runners-up St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa in the third round. In the quarter final match, they registered a first innings victory over Lumbini College and qualified to the semifinal.

St. Joseph Vaz College reached the final defeating Mahinda College, Galle while St. Anthony’s College qualified to the final lap defeating Trinity College in their respective semi final encounters. Rev.Fr Priyanjeewa Gunarathne, the principal of St. Joseph Vaz College guided the team with the assistance of master-in-charge of cricket Mrs. Dilhani Perera while Mr. Amila Sampath played his role as the head coach of the team. 

Rev.Fr Henry Bernard Wijerathne, the principal of St. Anthony’s College guided the team with the assistance of master-in-charge of cricket Mr. Amila Ariyarathne while Mr. Dimuthu Weerasinghe played his role as the head coach of the team. Menusha Perera captained the U15 team of St. Joseph Vaz College while Lahiru Abeysinghe led St. Anthony’s College.
