After successfully conducting two ‘Residential Training Camps’ last month in Colombo and Pallekelle with the participation of 13 and 24 players respectively, SLC have divided 40 of their nationally contracted players into 4 groups with each group of 10 players training while strictly adhering to all health guidelines imposed by the government in view of the existing pandemic. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all the training sessions at Khettarama were stopped last March.

The current training groups are named from ‘A’ to ‘D’, while another development squad of 12 players (group ‘E’) will also be using the training facilities.

As per the guidelines issued by the health authorities, all players will not be present or train at the same time. If group ‘A’ is using the gym, situated on the first floor of the Media Center, then group ‘B’ would be training in the side-nets or on the main grounds. The training sessions have been scheduled for a maximum of two-hour slots.

Senior players such as Test/ODI skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, T20 captain Lasith Malinga and former captains, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera, are all part of this special training schedule.

Despite not knowing when their next international assignment would be, the national team head coach, Mickey Arthur emphasized during the ‘Residential Training Camp’ that his goal is to prepare the national team to be the best conditioned international outfit post Covid-19.

“We will be completely ready by 25th July for international cricket. Our aim is to become the best prepared International team post-Covid – 19 and to be ready to play at any given time,” said Mickey Arthur last month.
