Charith Asalanka, Mohammad Nawaz star as Galle Gallants seal Qualifier 1 spot

Galle Gallants secured their place in Qualifier 1 of the Lanka Premier League 2026 after defeating Colombo Kaps by 13 runs in the 19th match of the tournament played today (1st August) at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

The victory marked Galle Gallants’ fifth win of the campaign, guaranteeing them a top-two finish in the league stage.

After being put into bat, Galle Gallants produced a commanding batting display to post 201 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Charith Asalanka continued his impressive run of form, leading the innings with 58 runs off 37 deliveries, striking 7 fours and 2 sixes. Sahan Arachchige provided valuable support with a brisk 43 off 29 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, helping the Gallants cross the 200-run mark.

Left-arm spinner Wanuja Sahan was the standout bowler for Colombo Kaps, finishing with figures of 2 for 28 from his four overs.

Chasing 202 for victory, Colombo Kaps mounted a spirited fightback but were restricted to 188, falling 13 runs short of the target.

Ben McDermott top-scored with 38 runs, while Sadeera Samarawickrama and Malsha Tharupathi made useful contributions of 37 and 36 respectively. However, none of the batters were able to convert their starts into a match-winning innings.

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz delivered a match-defining spell for Galle Gallants, claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs to derail the Kaps’ chase and seal an important victory.
