Sri Lanka Football has won the hosting rights for the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U17 Championship for the first time.
The tournament will take place from 5thâ14th September in Colombo. This is the first time Sri Lanka is hosting a SAFF tournament since the 2012 SAFF Womenâs Championship.
âThis is a testament in the current President of Sri Lanka Football, Jaswar Umarâs vision to develop the age groups and give the players the platform to excel in home conditions in front of their beloved fansâ Sri Lanka Football said in their media release.
The matches will be played at the Racecourse International Stadium. Apart from Sri Lanka – India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Maldives will take part in this yearâs tournament. In the last edition (2019) hosts India defeated Nepal to become champions while Sri Lanka finished 4th.

âWe are so delighted to host this tournament in Sri Lanka after a very long time. This will be a key aspect in creating a future national team. This tournament will bring some additional foreign income to the country at this difficult period the country is facing. We are happy to contribute some forex revenue to the country through football,â said Jaswar Umar, President of FFSL.
Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) has stated that with the high interest created by the U20 selection trail, they expect to see a bigger number of participants for the trails from different parts of the country. Selection trails are expected to held in different parts of the country.
