Sri Lanka Cricket’s calendar for 2020/2021 domestic season announced

Major Club Tournaments for 2020/21 will begin as early as mid-September

The Domestic Cricket calendar for the upcoming 2020/2021 season has been released by Sri Lanka Cricket.

According to the SLC Tournament Committee, the Major Club Tournaments for the 2020/21 season will effectively commence from mid-September 2020. Tournament Committee Chairman Bandula Dissanayake confirmed to ThePapare.com that there will be four Major League tournaments in the 2020/2021 season including an Under-23 tournament as well.

The tentative Tournament Calendar is as follows.

2020/2021 Major Club Youth Tournament (Under 23)
16th September to 11th October 2020

2020/2021 Major Club T20 Tournament
22nd October to 8th November 2020

2020/2021 Major Club Limited Over Tournament
13th December 2020 to 6th January 2021

2020/2021 Major Club League Tier A and B Tournaments
15th January to 28th March 2021

Under-23 Major Club Youth Tournament will be competed among the 26 clubs from Tier A and Tier B who will be placed in 4 groups. Similarly, a 50-over tournament will also be organized for U-23 club teams.

Dissanayake also stated that the Provincial tournaments will be held after the Major League Club Tournaments, in April/May 2021. This year’s Provincial Tournaments (2019/2020) were scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ongoing 2019/2020 Major Club season will be wound up within this week (on August 27th) with the conclusion of the final round of Major Club League Tier A Tournament’s Super-8 round matches.

The window for Lanka Premier League

A window for the proposed 2020 Lanka Premier League Tournament which was pushed back to the end of the year has also been allocated by Sri Lanka Cricket.

The Tournament will be run between 14th November to 8th December 2020.

The LPL was previously scheduled to begin on August 28th but postponed due to operational problems involved with getting overseas players into the country and then into quarantine for 2 weeks prior to the tournament, with the reopening of Sri Lanka’s Airport also being delayed.
