Four matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted yesterday around the island.

Trinity College vs St. Joseph College

The traditional fixture between St. Joseph’s College and Trinity College commenced at the historic Asgiriya stadium. After winning the toss, Trinity skipper decided to bat first but could not post a big score on the board as they were bowled out for 195 runs.

16 year old off spinner Ashen Daniel was brilliant with the ball for St Josephs as he grabbed 7 wickets for 44 runs. In reply, the visitors were struggling at 122 runs for 8 as umpires called stumps on day one.

Zahira College vs Maliyadeva College

Maliyadeva College took major honours against Zahira College in a Group D fixture which commenced today at Zahira College Grounds. Host skipper won the toss and batted first but the decision backfired as they were bowled for just 84 runs. In reply, Maliyadeva batters scored 152 runs all out for their first innings.

Zahira College began their second innings 69 runs behind and posted 86 runs for 5 wickets at stumps on day one. Match will continue for day two.

Dharmapala College vs Nalanda College

A Group C fixture between Nalanda College and Dharmapala College commenced at Nalanda College Grounds. The Nalanda skipper won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first. The decision paid-off as Dharmapala was bundled out for just 70 runs. Kaveesh Tharusha was the pick of the bowlers for Nalanda with 5 wickets for just 9 runs.

In reply, Nalanda batters declared their innings at 239 runs for 9 wickets. Right handed batsman Avishka Perera made classy 89 runs for hosts. At stumps on day one, Dharmapala College was 12 for 1 and trail by 157 runs in the second innings.
