Sri Devananda conquers Jaffna – Division II Schools Cricket Roundup

The fourth week of October saw just a handful of matches in the Singer U19…

Sri Devananda College who beat Jaffna St. John’s College in Jaffna last week, faced a humiliating defeat in Karandeniya. Samith Isuru starred for the hosts, Karandeniya Central College as he top-scored with the bat and also picked up 8 wickets including a 5-fer in the second innings. His partner in crime Shavindu Umesh led the bowling in the first innings with a 5-wicket haul.

In the first tournament match of the week, Kalutara Vidyalaya managed to walk away with 0.15 points more than Asoka Vidyalaya. This was the second game of the week for the Kalutara boys and it was also played at the Kalutara Esplanade. Incidentally this game was washed out in the previous week and was postponed.

The best result of the week was achieved by Katuneriya St. Sebastian’s College as they managed to secure a 70-run win against Ja-Ela Christ King College in a tournament match at their school grounds. This being a low-scoring game, the bowling performance of Sithum Akilanka proved to be vital for the Sebastianites as he bagged a sum of 7 wickets in both innings.

Playing their second traditional game of the week, Karandeniya Central registered a memorable win over Negombo St. Peter’s College to complete two outright wins in the same week. The win was set up by Hansamana de Silva’s century and Janeth Kaushal’s 99 which followed a 9-wicket match performance by their star bowler Samith Isuru who also contributed with a half-century for their mammoth first innings score of 335.
