Sahil and Malinda star on opening day of inaugural Bens-Wesley Big Match

The 22nd Hill Country Battle of the Golds (Sri Sumangala College vs Sri Rahula College) and the inaugural annual Big Match played for Cartman Cup (Wesley College vs St. Benedict’s College) commenced today at Kandy and Colombo respectively.   

Wesley College, Colombo vs St. Benedict’s College  

Thenuka Perera, the Wesley Skipper, won the toss and opted to bat first. They managed to put 228 for 9 before declaring the innings in the 60th over. The opening batsman Sahil Dias top-scored with a knock of 50 runs off 87 balls with 7 fours.

The left-arm spinner Malinda Perera was very impressive with the ball for St. Benedict’s College as he picked up 6 wickets for 66 runs. The match will continue for day two on Monday (26th April).

After winning the toss, the Sumangala Skipper chose to bat first. They managed to post 208 runs for 9 wickets at stumps on day one. Thenuka Ekanayaka (38), Bandara Disanayaka (36) and Neranjan Maddage (31) chipped in with useful contributions with the bat for Sri Sumangala College.

Akash Gardiyawasam and Dilshan Arambegoda were the chief destroyers with the ball as they managed to take 3 scalps each for Sri Rahula College.

St. Peter’s College registered a thrilling 2-run win over St. Anthony’s College in a One Day encounter held between the two sides at Colombo. After been put into bat first, the Peterites posted 216 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs, with Manuja Kumara and Niman Umesh contributing with half centuries.

Antonians came close to the victory but they could not hold their nerve at the end as they were handed a 2-run defeat by Peterites. Munil Silva and Danal Hemananda were the chief architects of the Peterite victory as they shared 5 wickets among them.
