Trinity beat St. Anthony’s to enter Quarter-Finals

Trinity College, Kandy qualified to the Quarter Finals of U17 Division 1 Schools Cricket Tournament as they defeated St. Anthony’s College, Wattala by 5 wickets in a pre-quarterfinal encounter worked off today (17th August) at Dharmaraja College Grounds in Kandy.

St. Anthony’s College won the toss and chose to bat first. Harsha Weerasooriya and Shewan Dimasha opened the innings for Antonians and provided a solid start putting on 52 runs for the first wicket.

However, St. Anthony’s batters couldn’t capitalize on the good start given by their openers as they lost the remaining 9 wickets for just 150 runs. The opening batter Weerasooriya was the only batter who made a significant contribution with the bat as he stroked 74 runs off 117 balls with 7 fours.

Malith Rathnayake and Sweath Anurajeewa excelled with the ball for Trinity College taking 3 wickets each.

In reply, Trinity College got off to a shaky start losing one of their openers Pulisha Thilakarathna for a duck in the 2nd over of the innings but the other opening batter Dimantha Mahavithana and  Lakvin Abeysinghe built a match-defining 78-run partnership for the 2nd wicket setting the foundation for the victory for Trinity College.

Abeysinghe top scored with a knock of 80 runs off 101 balls with 12 fours while Mahavithana chipped in with a useful 42 runs off 75 balls with 5 fours. Mohamed Aadham who came to bat at No. 5, provided the late impetus to Trinity’s innings scoring valuable 40 runs off 53 balls with 5 fours.
