The 145th Battle of the Blues between Royal College, Colombo and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, commenced today (7th March) at SSC Grounds, Colombo.
Royal College skipper Sineth Jayawardana won the toss and opted to bowl first. The wicket-keeper batter Sadev Soysa and Senadhi Bulankulame opened the batting for S. Thomas’ College, and they managed to put on a solid partnership for the first wicket, adding 66 runs.

Soysa and Thomian No. 3 batter Dineth Goonewardene added another 66-run partnership for the second wicket before the former was dismissed after notching up a brilliant half-century.
Goonewardene then took over the mantle to score a patient half-century to strengthen Thomians’ grip on the game. The Thomian skipper Mahith Perera, who is in tremendous form with the bat, couldn’t put on a substantial score as his opposite number Jayawardana trapped him in front for just 36 runs.

After the dismissal of Perera, S. Thomas’ College lost their way to be knocked over for 297. After being 199/3 at one stage, the Thomians lost 7 wickets for 98 runs as Jayawardana and Ramiru Perera triggered a spectacular slide with the ball in the latter part of the day.
Jayawardana and Perera both picked up 4 wickets each for Royal College. The match will continue tomorrow for Day 2.
