Afghanistan U19 vs Sri Lanka U19

The 2nd Youth ODI between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan was played on the 2nd of April 2023 at the Tolerance Oval, Abu Dhabi.

After winning the toss, Sri Lankan skipper Shevon Daniel elected to bat first. However, the Sri Lankan U19 team struggled to build a decent total and were eventually all out for 161 runs in 36.5 overs.

The Sri Lankan innings started off on a shaky note as they lost their first wicket in the 2nd over of the match. Despite a few brief partnerships, the Sri Lankan team kept losing wickets at regular intervals, which prevented them from building a solid foundation. The highest scorer for Sri Lanka was their number 7 batter Vihas Thevmika, who scored 33 runs off 22 balls. Other notable contributions came from Duvindu Ranatunga (28) and Hiran Jayasundara (21).

The Afghanistan bowlers, on the other hand, put in a disciplined effort, with almost every bowler chipping in with at least one wicket. Left-arm spinner Kamran Hotak was the pick of the bowlers, as he finished with figures of 3/26. Left-arm seamer Faridoon Dawoodzai also impressed with the ball, finishing with figures of 3/30.

A target of 162 was never going to be enough to defend and despite losing three early wickets, Afghanistan never looked in trouble during their chase, as Numan Shah took charge of the innings and anchored the chase with an unbeaten knock of 72 which came in 67 balls. He scored his runs at a strike rate of 107 and hit 6 boundaries and 2 sixes during his stay at the crease. Along with the middle order batter Ali Nasar (25*), he put on a crucial partnership of 42 runs for the 4th wicket, which all but sealed the match in Afghanistan’s favor.

The Sri Lankan bowlers tried their best to make a comeback into the match, but were unable to make any significant inroads into the Afghan batting line-up. Left-arm spinner Vishwa Lahiru was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka, as he finished with figures of 1/19. Vihas Thewmika, Theeraka Ranatunga and Dinura Kalupahana were also able to get a wicket each.

With this win, Afghanistan took a lead of 2-0 lead in the series.
