Sri Lanka U19 vs Afghanistan U19- First ODI

The 1st ODI between Sri Lanka youth and Afghanistan youth was played on the 1st of April 2023 at the Tolerance Oval, Abu Dhabi.

The stage was set at Tolerance Oval, Abu Dhabi, as Afghan Skipper Haroon Khan won the toss and decided to bat first. The Afghan team started their innings strongly, with openers Wafiullah Tarakhil and Jamshid Zadran providing a solid foundation. The Sri Lankan bowlers were unable to break the partnership, and the duo put up a decent opening stand of 96 runs before Tarakhil was dismissed for 68 runs which came off 50 deliveries. Jamshad, however, continued to bat confidently and he too scored a brilliant half-century (58 runs), which helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total.

Batting at number 4 Numan Shah played a well-composed innings as he went on to get 64 runs off 66 deliveries which helped Afghanistan to post a total of 232 for 10 in 45.2 overs. None of the other Afghan batters were able to get going as the majority of them got out for a single digit.

Malsha Tarupathi was the star with the ball for Sri Lanka as he picked 4 important wickets in the 6 overs that he bowled (6.0-1-31-4). Along with him Vihas Thevmika (10.0-0-29-2) impressed with the ball as he went on to grab 2 wickets while Garuka Sanketh and Theeraka Ranathunga were able to get a wicket each.

Chasing a target of 233 the Sri Lankan team had a challenging task ahead of them, as they needed to chase down a relatively competitive target to win the match. The recent history between the 2 teams didn’t help their cause either as it added more pressure on the young Lankans.

However, the Sri Lankan top order led by their captain Shevon Daniels set things up for their team. When Shevon got out after scoring 67 runs Sri Lanka was in a very good position at 169-4 in 24.2 overs needing another 64 runs in 25.4 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Sineth Jaywardane (29), Vishen Halambage (17), Dinura Kalupahana (20) and Hiran Jayasundara (15) were the other top-order batters who vastly played the supporting role along with Shevon.

Unfortunately, that was it in terms of scoring for Sri Lanka as their lower order collapsed heavily from a winning position. The Lankans got all out for 182 runs in 30.2 overs handing them their third consecutive defeat against Afghanistan. Losing 6 wickets for just 13 runs left the Lankan dressing room shell-shocked.

Right-arm fast bowler, Kahlel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan as he picked up 5 wickets with impressive figures of 8.0-0-38-5. Faridoon Dawoodzai also was able to pick up 2 wickets while conceding 28 runs in the 4.2 overs that he bowled.

The 2nd ODI in this bilateral series will be played on the 2nd of April at the Tolerance Oval.
