Eight matches of the SLC Major Clubs 50 Over Tournament 2023/24 were worked off today (19th December) at several venues across the island.

Irosh Samarasooriya and Shalith Fernando lit up the day, scoring brilliant centuries for Galle Cricket Club in their encounter against Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club.

Samarasooriya made 128 runs off 153 balls with 15 fours and a six, while Fernando hit an unbeaten 101 runs off 94 balls with 8 fours and 5 sixes as Galle CC posted a commanding total – 291/6 on the board in the allotted 50 overs.

However, the match ended without a result as rain interrupted the play in the 13th over of the second innings when Tamil Union C & AC were 58/1.

Sinhalese Sports Club continued their winning streak, registering their 3rd win of the season today against Burgher Recreation Club.

Batting first, SSC posted a competitive total – 272 on the board thanks to Dasun Shanaka’s blistering half-century. He smashed 76 runs off 44 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 172.72.

In reply, BRC were knocked over for 173 runs, handing a 99-run win for the opposition. The Skipper Charith Asalanka showcased his skills with the ball, picking up 4 wickets for 44 runs.

The veteran batter Angelo Mathews put up a lone fight for Colts Cricket Club as he hit an impressive knock in a losing cause against Moors Sports Club.

Mathews stroked 72 runs off 94 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes as Colts CC posted 171 runs in 43 overs. The off-spinner Ramesh Mendis continued his wicket-taking form in the tournament, claiming a 4-wicket haul for Moors SC.

In reply, Moors SC managed to post 112 runs for 3 wickets when rain stopped play. Moors SC were awarded the win as they were 22 runs ahead of DLS par score.
