Rain and bad light hamper 3rd day’s play

Rain around Colombo and bad light in the afternoon sessions prevented any outright results on day 3 as the week 5 matches of the under 23 division 1 tournament ended on Sunday handing first innings wins for SSC, CCC, Ragama and SL Ports.

SSC vs Negombo 

SSC batted out day 3 and ended the game with only a first innings win before rain and bad light ended play early with 28 overs lost at Bloomfield grounds. Kavindu Kulasekara top scored for SSC in the 2nd innings with an unbeaten 76 runs while Ramesh Mendis chipped in with 48 valuable runs. SSC ended the day’s play on 249 runs for the loss of 6 wickets at stumps on day 3.

Bloomfield vs Ragama

Rukshan Weerasinghe hammered a stunning century but could not give his team Bloomfield C & AC a much needed first innings win over the fancied Ragama CC at Braybrooke place. Resuming from their overnight score of 322, Bloomfield added 38 runs more for the final two wickets before Ragama bowlers closed out the game. Ragama CC batted 53 overs in their 2nd innings making 232 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Double centurion in the first innings made 78 runs.

Colts vs CCC

CCC had to satisfy with only a first innings win as Colts skipper Shehan Fernando hammered a thunderous century to draw the game at Colts grounds. Chasing 299 runs to win in the 4th innings of the match, Colts CC were restricted to 166 for 6 at close of play while Colts spinner Akila Dananjaya claimed 7 wickets in the CCC 2nd innings. Shehan’s superb innings of 101 came in just 88 balls with 8 fours and 7 sixes.

Moratuwa vs SL Ports

Bad weather and gritty batting helped Moratuwa claim a salvaging draw as SL Ports failed to take the final wicket at CCC as Moratuwa got through the skin of their teeth. Chasing 334 runs to win the game outright, Moratuwa ended the day’s proceedings on 241 for 9 in 84 overs. Nipun Chamara top scored with 57 runs.
