Navy women pull off a one run thriller vs the Air women in the final of the Women’s limited overs cricket tournament.

Winning the toss and electing to field, the Air Force women began well as they got rid of Navy opener Prasadani Weerakkody in the fifth over of the game for just 5 runs of 19 balls. However following a good start with the ball the Air Force women let the game slip away as Navy posted a 36 run partnership for the second wicket. Deepika Rasangika was the second wicket to fall for Navy when caught by Rangika Fernando off the bowling of Chamila Peiris for 16 runs off 41 balls.

Although the second wicket partnership provided runs for the Navy, from there on it was all Air Force as they managed to reduce the Navy women to 5-59 in 21.5 over’s. Leading the recovery Suwini de Alwis and Maduri Samuddika added 37 valuable runs for the seventh wicket to revive the Navy women’s innings somewhat, as they went on to pose 126 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 49.5 overs.

Following the good show with the ball Air Force came out with confidence sky high but lost the first wicket of Chamari Atapattu for just 10 runs in the second over of the game. Early wickets hurt the process for the Air Force women as they were reduced to 5-61 in 24.5 overs.

With the hopes of recovering the run chase Oshadi Ranasinghe and captain Chamani Seneviratne managed to grind 19 runs out of a firm Navy bowling.

Following the dismissal of Oshadi Ranasinghe for 21 runs off 63 balls the Air Force batting crumbled as they fell 1 run short of the Navy score to hand Navy women the limited over’s cricket tournament for the year 2014.
