Navy demolished Army 5-0 in the final of the Defense Services Games Women’s Football Championship 2023 at the Racecourse International Stadium.
Heavy favourites with star players, Navy took control of the game from the start. They dominated possession and staged numerous attacks from the two wings.
However, it took them until the 39th minute to open the scoring. Ayomi Wijerathne could only parry Stephanie Dias’ free-kick into the path of Thushani Madushika who had the easiest of tap-ins. Four minutes later Madushika doubled the lead with a 22-yard rocket into the top left corner.

After the break, in the 54th minute Navy made it 3-0 when Dias converted Praveena Perera’s low cross, from the right, at the far post. Minutes later Army did have a great chance, but the cross was hit directly at the Navy goalkeeper.
On the hour mark Perera had a great opportunity on a breakaway run but could only direct the ball wide of the target. Minutes later Navy thought they had the 4th but it was deemed off-side.
They did get the 4th in the 85th minute, through a stunning 35-yard free-kick by Poornima Perera where Wijerathna mis-judged the trajectory of the ball as it sailed over her and into the goal. In the 90th minute they added the 5th off a rebound.
