Nalanda College Colombo and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa secured their places in the semi-finals of the ‘Singer’ under 19 limited-overs tournament 2016 winning their respective quarter-finals on Thursday.

Nalanda College vs St. Aloysius College

Kavindu Bandara’s excellent all-round performance helped Nalanda College beat giant-killing St. Aloysius College by a mammoth 111 runs at St. Sebastian’s College grounds.

The Nalandians opted to bat first on a lucid surface. Top-order batsmen Kasun Sandaruwan and Kavindu Bandara made fighting half-centuries, 67 and 50 respectively as the lads from Campbell Place posted 199 on the board from their allotted 50 overs. Hareen Buddhila was the most impressive bowler for the team from Galle picking up 3 scalps for 32 runs.

Chasing 200 runs to win, St. Aloysius faltered at the hands of some disciplined and tight bowling by the Nalandians. Left-arm spinner Umeshka Dilshan and right-arm fast-bowler Suhanga Wijewardene picked up 3 wickets each for the winners as they bowled their opponents for only 88 runs.

Nalanda College will next take on the winner of St. Peter’s College and Trinity College quarter-final game.

Isipathana College vs St. Sebastian’s College

The dark horses of the current schools season, St. Sebastian’s College recorded an emphatic 44-run win over the strong Isipathana College outfit at Colts grounds.

The Isipathana captain Salinda Ushan won the toss and elected to field first. Right-handed Tharusha Fernando top-scored for the lads from Moratuwa with a fine knock of 40 while important cameos from Mishen Silva, Avishka Fernando and Sandaruwan Fernando guided St. Sebastian’s College to a par score of 215. Lahiru Dilshan and Ayana Siriwardane captured 3 wickets apiece.

Chasing 216 runs to win, the in-form Isipathana batting line up faltered at the hands of left-arm spinner, Praveen Jayawickrama and off-spinner Nimesh Bandara as they were bowled out for only 171 runs. Skipper Salinda Ushan was the only batsman to get going on a testing pitch.

St. Sebastian’s College will face either Ananda College or Prince of Wales College as their next opponent.
