Blue Star SC managed to take down defending champions Colombo FC by 1-0 in the 2nd half continuation to keep title hope alive in the Dialog Champions League Super 8 week 6 match held at the Kelaniya Football Complex.

Heavy rain spoils Blue Star v Colombo FC

Torrential rain and waterlogged pitch at the Kelaniya Football Complex forced officials to postpone the second half proceedings of the title contenders…

With second half proceedings being hampered by torrential rain rain last Sunday, the rest of the match continued today(22nd Feb) with Blue Star SC having a 1-0 advantage.

The game was highly intense from kick off with Blue Star bringing out the attack for the first few minutes of the 2nd half.

Although they played an initial spell of sloppy football, Colombo FC came back into the game looking for a goal and won a couple of free kicks along the way. But they were quite unlucky as none of the kicks were converted into goals.

The best effort came from Momas Yapo when he fired a long range pile driver but was unfortunate not to score as it rattled the crossbar and went out for a goal kick. Colombo FC were camped inside the opposition half for the rest of the 2nd half but were unable to convert possession into goals.

A couple of serious injuries occurred as well with Mohamed Farzeen damaging his knee and Afonja Jibola was seen with his face covered in blood a while later.

Nagur Meera had some close calls in getting an equalizer but his own errors and good defending prevented him from scoring.

Even with additional five minutes of injury time, Colombo FC failed to make a comeback, giving away the match as Blue Star goes into the final week of DCL with an advantage.

Blue Star SC coach Mr. Chandradasa Karunaratne speaking to ThePapare.com said;

‘I’m not entirely satisfied with the game today because we couldn’t put together our usual team due to many injuries. I believe today’s win is a gift from God. Since we have nearly two weeks until our final match I hope to prepare a good game plane and win it as well. Hopefully the injured players would have recovered by then.’
