Week 3 of the Dialog Schools Rugby League will kick off tomorrow (7th May). Let’s take a closer look at the games and see what’s in store.
Prince of Wales College vs St. Peter’s College
The curtain raiser for this week’s action will take place at the Air Force Grounds in Rathmalana. The Cambrians face the daunting proposition of welcoming a Peterite side on the back of two wins with 50+ points. You fear that producing a result here will be too tall of an ask, especially for a newly promoted side.
Prediction – St. Peter’s College win
Mahanama College vs St. Joseph’s College
Super Saturday in store this weekend, with seven games set to kick-off simultaneously around the country. We’ll head back to the Air Force Grounds where Mahanama College welcomes a Josephian outfit who’ll be hurting after a heavy defeat last week. If Mahanama start well, this game could go either way. However the boys from Darley Road have too much quality on paper to lose this one.
Prediction – St. Joseph’s College win
Ananda College vs Wesley College
Another group 2A encounter at the Ananda College Grounds. The home team will be riding a wave of momentum after notching up their first victory last week. Wesley College have two wins from two but looked off colour last week. Against a tricky Anandian outfit, the Double Blues will need to bring their A-game.
Prediction – Wesley College win
D.S Senanayake College vs St. Anthony’s College
Two winless sides will meet at Pallekele. Both teams will be desperate to get points on the board this season, especially the Dons who still have most of last year’s Plate Champion side in their ranks. After a top 4 finish in 2023, the Eagles have had a steady fall from grace and are in need of inspiration and points or else their place in the top division could be at risk. This game is a good opportunity to do so however the Dons should snatch this one, considering the quality they possess in the pack.
Prediction – D.S Senanayake College win
Sri Sumangala College vs Trinity College
Arguably the game of the week as two of the unbeaten sides from group 1A lock horns up in the hills. Trinity have almost been playing in second gear in their two games so far but Sri Sumangala have proved to us all that they are a force to be reckoned with this season. Both teams play an enterprising brand of rugby with some mobile forwards and a backline that loves to kick, and both of them will be looking to beat each other at their own game. If Sri Sumangala College rises to the occasion, we’re in for a thriller.
Prediction- Trinity College win
Royal College vs Zahira College
Certainly a game that promises to be a lot closer than it looks on paper. Neither team has been as clinical as they would’ve wanted in their first two games. Royal’s superior bench strength should get them over the line however if Zahira can produce a good first half, this one could go either way.
Prediction – Royal College win
Science College vs S. Thomas’ College
Another game that promises to be a lot closer than it is on paper. Science College will be hurting after blowing a 19-0 lead against Zahira last week, while S. Thomas’ will be more relieved than anything after their win against Kingswood. The Thomians have looked scrappy with their handling and work at the breakdown so far and we know how good Science College can be if their opponents give them scrappy ball to work with.
Prediction – S. Thomas’ win
Thurstan College vs Kingswood College
Thurstan College go into this game as firm favourites after their win of the Thomians and a good performance against Royal College, despite ending up on the losing side. For all the promise they showed last year, the boys from Randles Hill have looked lacklustre this year with no signs of improvement.
Prediction – Thurstan College win
Lumbini College vs Isipathana College
We round out week 3 at Havelock Park where the two neighbouring schools lock horns. Despite having some very promising players up their ranks, Lumbini College are still adjusting to the top division and you can’t expect the Green Machine to give them much of a sniff either.
Prediction – Isipathana College win
