The 5th annual Carlton Regatta, the rowing segment of the Carlton Super Sports 2013 was held on March 01st on the waters of the Tissamaharama weva.
Heats held at the Colombo Rowing Club on February 27th determined the nine crews which made it through to the semi-finals and finals yesterday. Races were held in a team format, with a Scull, Double Scull and Coxed Four racing twice for each crew. Each 600 m race earned a specific amount of points which determined the overall winners.
In the Men’s category semi-finals, the SL Air Force swept past the Colombo Rowing Club, and the SL Navy beat both Royal College and the Army to qualify for the finals. The Air Force triumphed here, winning both the Sculls and the Fours to gain 10 points, while Navy picked up 5 points for the Double Sculls.
In the Women’s category qualifiers, the Colombo Rowing Club and Bishop’s College trumped Museaus College and the SL Army respectively to enter the finals. CRC emerged victorious with a 10-5 point lead over BC. CRC won both the Scull and Fours races, while Bishop’s took the Double Scull events.
Many of the races were held after nightfall, with the tank flood-lit to create a unique atmosphere at theregatta. This event is one which promotes awareness and interest in the sport of rowing in areas outside Colombo. It was organised by ‘Tharunayata Hetak’ and conducted by Royal College, Colombo.
