Peterite Cricket League returns after 13 years

The Peterite Cricket League (PCL), launched in 2011, is set to be played for the first time since 2013 on 7 and 8 November at the college grounds, marking a new chapter in the development of cricket at the college.

With the Peterite Cricket Foundation at the heart of this initiative, the league aims to strengthen Peterite cricket from the junior level while bringing together players from different generations through a shared passion for the game.

The return of the Peterite Cricket League reflects a renewed commitment to the future of Peterite cricket, bringing together players through a competitive franchise-based tournament. The tournament is backed by the British School of Commerce as the Main Sponsor, a university offering scholarship opportunities for studies in the United Kingdom.

Speaking on behalf of the Main Sponsor, Rochelle Vanderwall, Head of Operations at British School of Commerce, Colombo, highlighted the institution’s commitment to education and its expanding range of academic opportunities. She also invited participants to nominate deserving students for scholarship opportunities.

“British School of Commerce, Colombo (BSC) has been in the business of producing high-network professionals since 2010 through its Master’s programme. With a view to supporting future educational requirements, BSC has now launched a BBM degree, alongside the internationally recognized Qualifications Scotland Foundation and HND programmes, leading to a degree from the University of Suffolk, UK. Scholarships are on offer, and I invite participants of the tournament to nominate students who have demonstrated academic excellence and achievements in extracurricular activities to apply immediately,” she said

Steadfast Cargo Services LLC, a Dubai-based cargo services company, as the Silver Sponsor. Beyond the competition, the initiative aims to nurture young talent, encourage wider participation and build a stronger foundation for the next generation of Peterite cricketers.

“Steadfast Cargo Services LLC is proud to be the Silver Sponsor of the Peterite Cricket League 2026, supporting a tournament that brings together generations of Peterites through their shared passion for cricket. Just as we are committed to connecting businesses and opportunities across the globe through our customized, end-to-end logistics solutions, we are proud to support an initiative that builds connections, strengthens bonds and inspires the next generation of Peterite cricketers. At Steadfast, we believe that success is built on teamwork, trust, commitment and perseverance — values that lie at the heart of both our business and the spirit of cricket. As the Peterite Cricket League returns to the field, we are delighted to be part of this exciting journey, celebrating the proud traditions of St. Peter’s College while contributing to the continued growth and future of Peterite cricket.”

Under the leadership of President Hans Fernando and PCL Committee Chairman Lakshan Rodrigo, the tournament is being organized with the broader objective of supporting the continued growth of Peterite cricket. The involvement of the Peterite Cricket Foundation highlights the importance of investing in junior cricket and creating opportunities for players to develop their skills and remain connected to the sport.

The tournament will feature eight franchises, namely Thambapanni Lions, Resistance Panthers, Bamba Patriots, Colombo Sports Hub, Top Knock Titans, Colombo Tuskers, Foundation Guardians and UK Peterites. The franchise format is expected to bring together players from different backgrounds within the Peterite community, adding a new dimension to the competition.

Adding further significance to the tournament, the championship-winning team will be awarded the Rev. Sunil Herman Perera Memorial Champions Trophy, while the runners-up will receive the Mr. Austin Fernando Memorial Shield. These memorial awards pay tribute to the individuals they commemorate while reinforcing the traditions, values and community spirit that continue to shape Peterite cricket.

Matches will be played in a fast-paced format of six overs per innings, with eight players per side. Each franchise will bring together players from four age groups, including schoolboys, players aged 20–30, players aged 30–40 and those over 40. This format will create an opportunity for different generations of Peterites to compete alongside one another, share their experiences and strengthen the bonds within the Peterite cricket community.

The tournament is supported by a range of partners, with ThePapare as the Official Broadcasting Partner, Groove Zone Entertainment as the Official Entertainment Partner and the Peterite Media Unit as the Official Social Media Partner. Hemas Hospitals will serve as the Official Medical Partner, while Blue Lanka Tours will be the Match Officiating Partner and Life Moments the Official Photography Partner. Ada Derana Sports joins as the Official Media Partner, with CricWire serving as the Official Online News Partner.

Beyond the tournament itself, the return of the Peterite Cricket League represents a wider effort to strengthen cricket at St. Peter’s College. By placing particular emphasis on development from the junior level, the initiative seeks to support the long-term progress of the sport and help nurture future Peterite cricketers.

With the Peterite Cricket League returning to the field, the tournament marks an important step towards building a stronger future for Peterite cricket. Through the support of the Peterite Cricket Foundation, its sponsors and partners, the leadership of its organizers and the participation of the wider Peterite community, the league aims to bring generations of Peterites together while contributing to the continued development of the game.
