Sri Lanka Cricket set for coaching structure overhaul

Sri Lanka Cricket’s coaching department is set for a major…

He will oversee all international cricket, the high-performance unit at Khettarama and the brand-new brain center operations at Maitland Place as well as women’s cricket.

“Gurusinha will have more responsibility than Simon Wills. With his experience of working with the national team, as the team manager, who knows exactly what the team’s requirement we believe with the World Cup coming up in a year, Gurusingha’s role will help us to build our plan for our goal of winning the tournament in the United Kingdom,” Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala said to the media.

Gurusinha was brought into the SLC system in March last year as the Cricket Manager before being given more powers as a national selector and selector on tour. He will replace Englishmen Simon Willis who worked as the High Performance Manager. Willis decided to terminate his contract due to family reasons.

“I think our bigger problem is not managing the national team. Hathurusingha and Gurusinha worked together well and we gave it a thought whether to separate them but Gurusinha is an Australian level 3 qualified coach, who has a good technical knowledge to be the high-performance manager, which is our feeder system. There are players who are getting injured at the national level, they take longer than we expect them to recover so our rehabilitation has a fairly big situation. “ Sumathipala further said.

Gurusinha’s job will be to assess the performance of all the national players, oversee the SLC’s cricket academy based at Khettarama and feed valuable input to the national team using the data from the brain center.

“Brain Center is new but we have been using data for a long time now and what SLC has done is that we have our own data center. The coaching staff spend sometimes 3-4 hours analyzing a certain player before they present it to the players every day. Even the provincial tournament is captured every ball so any player can analyze their performance and using the GPS system, they can get an idea of their intensity level, which no other country has and it’s a major investment done by SLC. “ Gurusinha told the media on Friday.

SLC also revealed that they will hold their Annual General Meeting on 19th May to elect new office-bearers and the nominations deadline has been set for 27th April. The two-year term of the current regime ended in January earlier this year but got their tenure extended by six months due to the new sports law.

“There will be some changes in the contested positions with the current secretary, Air Commodore Roshan Biyanwila opting not to contest due to official commitments.” Sumathipala said.
