Zahira & Hameed Al Husseinie sets up mouth-watering final in the U18 Division I Championship 2022

Zahira College and Hameed Al Husseinie College defeated Jaffna Central & St. Joseph’s respectively to book a place in the final of Renown President’s Cup – U18 Division I Championship 2022.

Zahira v Jaffna Central

In the 1st semi final Zahira College demolished Jaffna Central 8-2 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. Zahira opened the scoring through Mufaddal Ziard in the 24th minute before Mohamed Shahil doubled the lead in the 43rd minute.

At half time the score read 2-0 but the 2nd 45 minutes saw a total of 8 goals being scored by both sides. Shahil scored the 3rd in the 49th minute and L. Harish’s own goal in the 53rd minute made it 4-0. M. Santosh pulled one goal back for the Jaffna boys in the 55th minute but Shahil restored the 4-goal cushion and completed the hat-trick two minutes later.

After a quiet period of 23 minutes, Fareeq Ahamed made it 6-1 in the 80th minute and J. Harish added the 2nd for Jaffna Central a minute later. Substitute Mohamed Akeel scored the 7th and 8th goals in the 84th and 90th minutes.

St. Joseph’s v Hameed Al Husseinie

The 2nd semi-final saw a much more intense affair as it needed a late goal from Hameed Al Husseinie College to defeat St. Joseph’s College.

Hameedians had most of the possession and created chances but were poor in execution. St. Joseph’s on the other hand relied on a compact defense and counterattacks. It was substitute M.F. Abdullah’s goal, after a good build-up play, in the 81st minute, eased the nerves of the Hameedians.

However, with the Josephians pushing men forward Abdullah had two great one-on-one chances against the goalkeeper S. Krishna but he was able to save them both. Krishna had a good day between the posts for the Darley Road boys making a few saves.
