The Sri Lankan athletic season for the year 2019 will kick start on the 19th of January with the Junior trials for the Asian Youth (U18) Athletic Championship set to be held at the Sugathadasa stadium in Colombo.
The Junior trials which will be the season opener for Sri Lanka athletics was brought forward to January having initially being scheduled for February. It will see the participation of youth athletes between the ages of 17 to 15 years, trialing for a spot in the contingent that will represent Sri Lanka at the Asian Youth Athletic Championship which will be held in Hong Kong from the 15th to 17th March.

The Asian Youth (Under 18) Championship is a biennial competition which commenced in the year 2015 with the inaugural tournament held in Doha, Qatar. Sri Lanka managed to collect 4 medals which included a Gold and 3 Silvers there. In the second edition of the championship which was held in Bangkok in 2017 Sri Lanka managed to collect a Silver and a Bronze to increase their total medal tally to six medals at the competition.

Sri Lanka has reportedly been handed a quota of 7 slots for the competition with the athletes expected to meet the qualification standards at the trials which have been set out by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka (AASL). However, the AASL is expected to be lenient on the qualification mark as the initial trial which was scheduled to be held in February was brought forward as the organizers of the meet have advanced the deadlines for the entries.
