Four games of the ongoing Schools U19 Cricket Tournament were worked off today (14) with one coming to a close in pleasing of the Mazenodians.

A tier A fixture between Royal College, Colombo and De Mazenod College, Kandana came ended in a draw with the Mazenodians stunning the Royalist in the first innings.

Having played the game in Kandana, the home team scored 204 runs for their first innings, thanks to some lower-order recovery work by the batters.

Sithum Fernando top scored for the Mazenodians with 51 runs to his name while Thareen Sanketh (41) and Maleesha Mihishan (47) chipped in with super valuable forties for each of them.

In the Royalist camp, Venusha Akash was the top performer with the ball, as the opening bowler picked up 3 wickets for 41 runs.

Coming out to bat, the Royalists found themselves in trouble early as they lost their first couple of wickets on 8 runs. The situation kept on getting worse as the Royalist batters kept racing back to the hut. None of them actually managed to show intent with the bat as the Royalists were folded for 131 runs.

It was the Mazenodian opening bowler, Thushan Udayanga, who ran through the Royalist batting with Sithum Fernando assisting him in the assault. Udayanga bagged five wickets for 27 runs while Fernando managed 3 scalps for his merits.

The rest of the game although was a mere formality as it headed towards a tamed draw.

In a traditional fixture between St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota and Thurstan College, Colombo, Ravindu Kapukotuwa of St. Anthony’s scored a brisk 65 to earn praise for the best batting performance of the day. He was supported well by his partner Thisara Ekanayake who shone with 63 runs.

The Antonians gave a rough time at the crease for the Thurstanites as they uprooted them entirely twice and won the game with an innings and 32 runs. Ekanayake was outstanding with the ball in hand too as he registered a fifer in the second innings.

Nidula Jayakodi (64) of Bandaranayake College, Gampaha and D T G Amarasingha (61) of Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa are the other batters to make fifties today while no other fifers were recorded.
