Three Semi-finals of the U19 Schools Cricket Division 1 Tier ‘A’ and Tier ‘B’ competition commenced today (3rd April) at a few venues in Sri Lanka.

Trinity College, Kandy took on Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala today in the 1st Semi-final of the U19 Division 1 Tier ‘A’ competition at Kirimandala Mawatha Cricket Grounds.

After having won the toss, Trinitian Skipper Rahal Amarasinghe put Maliyadeva to bat first, but they were not able to make a challenging total, being bowled out for 139. Gayana Weerasinghe was the only batter who showed some promise with a 95-ball 65. Tharana Wimaladarma took 4/34 with the ball, while Dinuka Thennakoon got 3 wickets as well.

In reply, Trinity College took control, adding 106 runs for 2 wickets, with Dinusha Peiris remaining not out on 40 when stumps were called on Day 1.

The 2nd Semi-final of the U19 Division 1 Tier ‘A’ round started today between St. Joseph’s College and St. Benedict’s College, at the S. Thomas’ College Junior Grounds in Mt. Lavinia.

After opting to bat first, Josephian openers Sadeesh Jayawardane and Sahan Dabare added 77 runs before both departing in the 40s. From being 3 down for 137, Naren Muralitharan and Avintha De Alwis took their team to a dominant position with an unbroken 157-run stand.

Muralitharan was unbeaten on 102 while Alwis remained not out on 86 when the Umpires called for an early stumps on Day 1, due to bad light. For St. Benedict’s College, Mevan Dissanayake was the only successful bowler with all 3 scalps.

Sebastian’s College, Katuneriya emerged Division 2 Tier ‘A’ Champions

Another Semi-final from the U19 Division 1 Tier ‘B’ round was played today at Surrey Village Grounds in Maggona, between St. Aloysius’ College and Maris Stella College.

After being invited to bat first by St. Aloysius’ College, Maris Stella’s Kaveen Fernando set the platform with a sensational hundred, while Shean Adithya stroked a half-century as well. Maris Stella College were on 239/3 at the end of Day 1.
