Avishka Perera strokes blazing century as Nalanda takes honors

Six matches of the Singer Schools ‘Under 19 Division 1’ Cricket Tournament 2018/19 were conducted today, around the island. Nalanda College, Richmond College and Devapathiraja College took major honors in the drawn encounters worked off today at different venues.

Nalanda College, Colombo vs Mahinda College, Galle

The traditional fixture between Nalanda College and Mahinda College ended in a draw today, at the Nalanda College Grounds with the hosts winning valuable innings points. The visitors only managed to post 196 runs in their first innings in reply to the Nalanda’s score of 324.

Right handed stroke maker Hansika Welihinda was the main contributor with the bat for the visitors as he stroked 85 runs off 145 balls which included 9 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 58.62. Nalanda off-spinner, Lakshitha Rasanjana was the pick of the bowlers with an impressive 4 wickets for 30 runs.

With first inning points in hand, the Nalanda College began their second innings and posted 176 runs for 3 wickets at close of play on day two. Right handed batsman Avishka Perera, who made his maiden ton of the season in his last game scoring 169 runs, scored his second century today with a blazing knock of 103 runs off 100 balls which included 3 fours and 9 sixes.

St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala vs Richmond College, Galle

The Group D fixture between Richmond College and St. Anne’s College also ended in a draw today at Kurunegala with the visitors claiming first innings points. Left arm spinner Dilum Sudeera shone with the ball for Richmondites with a 6-wicket haul for 68 runs. Thaveesha Abhishek (47) and Adithya Siriwardane (44) starred with the bat to guide the visitors to take first innings honors.

Devapathiraja College managed to take first innings points against Isipathana College in the drawn Group A fixture which concluded today at the BRC Grounds. Pathum Madusanka of Devapathiraja College was the standout performer as he stroked 108 runs with the bat and picked up 6 wickets with the ball in the match.

St. Peter’s College, Colombo vs St. Benedict’s College, Colombo

The traditional fixture between St. Peter’s College and St. Benedict’s College commenced today at the St. Benedict’s College grounds in Colombo. The hosts’ skipper won the toss and chose to bat first but could only manage a total of 136 runs as Peterite left arm spinner Kanishka Maduwantha ripped through their batting lineup taking 5 wickets for 29 runs.

In reply, the visitors were in a strong position at the close of play with a score of 108 runs for 2 wickets. In-form batsman Santhush Gunathilaka remained unbeaten on 34 runs at the crease.

The traditional fixture between Ananda College and Dharmaraja College commenced today at Dharmaraja College grounds in Kandy. After winning the toss, Ananda skipper opted to bat first and posted a solid 252 runs on the board. Kamesh Nirmal top scored with a knock of 77 runs for the lads from Colombo.

Upendra Warnakulasuriya shone with the ball for the hosts picking up a 6-wicket haul for 88 runs. In reply, the hosts posted 79 runs for no loss at stumps on day one.
