Two games of the Division 1 Schools U19 Cricket Tournament – Tier A were played today (20th March), while three games in Tier B were also worked off. Two other traditional matches were also played around the Isle.  

Tier A

St. Thomas’ College had a comprehensive 6-wicket win over St. Anne’s College in their Tier A game played today at St. Anne’s College Grounds in Kurunegala. Sachira Rashmika’s brilliant spell with the ball (4/16), and excellent half-tons made by  Hirantha Jayasinghe (60*) and Harindu Jayasekara (58) guided the boys from Matara to victory.

The encounter between Royal College and Gurukula College went down to the wire as Royal College managed to get over the line at the last minute, clinching a thrilling 6-run win. Ahan Wickramasinghe, who has been in great touch with the bat, once again top scored for Royals with an unbeaten knock of 92 runs.

Tier B

In the three Tier B games worked off today, St. Peter’s College, St. Anthony’s College and Mahinda College managed to record victories. St. Peter’s College had a dominating performance over Dharmaraja College thanks to the brilliant efforts of Vinuda Liyanage (64*), Nipunaka Fonseks (63) and Chamelker De Silva (3/15). 

Gihan Sathmika (50) and Romesh Suranga (44) shone with the bat in St. Anthony’s win over Devapathiraja, while Kawsitha Kodithuwakku single-handedly won Mahinda College their encounter against Thurstan College with a classy innings of 97 runs.

Traditional Matches

St. Joseph’s College dominated their traditional encounter against Wesley College with the collective effort from their batters and bowlers. The left-hander Shevon Daniel of St. Joseph’s College had a wonderful outing with the bat as he stroked 164 runs off 205 balls with 18 fours and 3 sixes. 

In the bowling department, the left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage was the pick of the bowlers for the Joes as he grabbed 6 wickets for 56 runs. 

St. Sebastian’s College managed to take major honors against Richmond College in their traditional encounter, which ended in a draw today. In a low-scoring affair, Sukitha Prasanna (62) and Sandesh Fernando (42) lit up the show with the bat while Crishan Fernando (3/15) and Kalana Sandeepa (3/21) showd impressive performance with the ball for the lads from Moratuwa.
