U19 Asia Cup discard Buddila shines for St Aloysius

Here’s a round up of the matches which took place today  in the Singer U19 Division I cricket Tournament.

Dharmapala College vs St Joseph Vaz College

This group C clash concluded with Dharmapala College taking first innings honours against St Joseph Vaz at Moratuwa. The boys from Wennappuwa won the toss and elected to bowl first. They failed to make early inroads with the ball, as the batsmen took control of the game in the first two session. Dharmapala College managed to post 253 runs all out in 79.4 overs. Avishka Hasarinda top scored with 54 while Dulaj Ashen and Malith Sandakalum chipped in with valuable cameos. Even though the batsmen dominated proceedings the highlight of day 1 was the 7 wicket haul from Sashan Dineth. He toiled hard right through the day and was duly rewarded for his efforts.

The reply from St Joseph Vaz was not convincing at all. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and ultimately got bowled out for 167 runs. Thilan Pradeptha who scored 45 runs was the only notable contributor with the bat. With a lead of 86 runs, Dharmapala College came on to bat for their second innings. They showed good intent and pushed their lead upto 203 runs and declared their innings. In the process they lost 6 wickets and 3 of them belonged to Dineth who completed his ten wicket haul for the match.

St Joseph Vaz College put up a much better performance in the second innings. At stumps they were 138 for 4 in just 22 overs.

St Benedict’s College vs Wesley College

A total of 22 wickets fell on day 1 of this traditional encounter between St Benedict’s College and Wesley College at Kotahena today. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first. Their innings never took off as the Wesley bowling attack ripped through the batting line up with ease. Movin Subasinghe used his experience and paved the way with 3 wickets early on and they rest of the bowlers made sure the hosts didnt get a big score on board.

After cleaning up the hosts for 122, Wesley had the chance to get their noses ahead in the game. Things did not go according to plan as their innings also crumbled cheaply. However, thanks to few good cameos from Hasith Geesara and Thisuraka Akmeemana they managed to get a slender lead of just 8 runs. Maheesh Theekshana bagged 5 for 31 for the Benedictines.

St Benedict’s had to bat out a few overs before stumps and it proved to be very costly for them as they lost 2 quick wickets for just 1 run in 2 overs. Play will resume tomorrow for day 2.

Nalanda College vs Dharmasoka College

Nalanda College bagged first innings points against Dharmasoka College today at Nalanda grounds. The visitors won the toss and elected to field first. They restricted the hosts for 227 runs with Dinuka Dilshan bagging 3 for 9 and Aroshana De Soyza taking 2 for 17. Chamidu Wijesinghe was the top scorer with a valuable half century while the rest of the batsmen chipped in with good knocks.

In reply, Dharmasoka were bowled out for just 202 runs thanks to a brilliant bowling spell by Kaveesha Madurapperuma who bagged 5 for 57. For the visitors, Sachin Sangeeth top scored with 56 while Dinuka Dilshan scored 40 runs.

At stumps on day 2, Nalanda College were 86 for 1 in their second innings.

Isipathana College vs St Aloysius College

Hareen Buddila’s 5 wickets haul gave St Aloysius the upper hand on day 1 in their group B clash against Isipathana College at Colts grounds. After been asked to bowl first, St Aloysius College took control of the match. Their bowling attack led by Hareen Buddila cleaned up Isipathana College for just 98 runs. Out of the 98 runs, 55 were scored by Sanjula Ilangathilaka which shows how the rest of the batsmen struggled against the St Aloysius bowling attack.

In reply, the boys from Galle were cruising at stumps with 140 runs on board with 8 wickets in hand.
