Ton-up Thirimanne makes strong case for selection

Two games of the Super Provincial four day cricket tournament, organized by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) continued for the 3rd day at Katunayake and Hambanthota.

Colombo vs Galle

Galle team managed to take major honours against the strong Colombo team on day three. The Colombo team resumed day three on 104 runs for 2 wickets but right-handed stroke maker Dananjaya de Silva was dismissed early for 66 runs finishing a brilliant 93-run partnership with Lahiru Thirimanne.

Sri Lanka’s test skipper Dinesh Chandimal could not stay long at the crease as he was dismissed for 18 runs by off spinner Akila Dananjaya. The lads from Colombo continued to lose wickets and at one stage were 171 runs for 6 wickets. However, experienced left hander Lahiru Thirimanne anchored the innings with the tail-enders building some valuable partnerships.

He built a 79-run partnership with Kavishka Anjula for the seventh wicket and another 81-run partnership with Lasith Ambuldeniya for the eighth wicket. Lahiru Thirimanne remained unbeaten on 125 runs which came off 258 balls and included 8 boundaries.

Off spinner Akila Dananjaya was the pick of the bowlers as he took 3 wickets for 61 runs while left arm seamer Mohomed Dilshad and left arm spinner Chathuranga de Silva picked up 2 wickets each for Galle as they began their second innings 143 runs ahead but only one over was bowled as the umpires stopped play for day three due to bad light at 4.30 pm.


Dambulla vs Kandy

The Kandy team resumed day three on 232 runs for 3 wickets with Niroshan Dickwella and Priyamal Perera continuing from where they left off yesterday. Skipper Dickwella stroked a magnificent century but was dismissed by Lahiru Gamage for 112 runs. His innings came off 154 balls at a strike rate of 72.72 and included 10 fours.

Priyamal Perera stroked 62 runs off 118 balls including 7 fours as they put on a 132-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, after their dismissals, Kandy collapsed from 340 for 5 to 364 runs all out. Right-arm seamer Lahiru Gamage was the main destroyer with the ball, picking up 5 important wickets for 71 runs.

In addition, off spinner Sachithra Serasinghe picked up 2 wickets for 39 runs for the Dambulla team. They began their second innings 116 runs ahead but could not get a good start as Kusal Mendis was dismissed again by Kasun Rajitha for 13 runs.

Fast bowler Kasun Rajitha continued to trouble the batsmen as number three batsman Nipun Karunanayake and first innings hero with the bat Ashan Priyanjan were both dismissed by him cheaply. Skipper Dimuth Karunarathne (40) and Sachithra Serasinghe (37) tried to rescue the innings with 63 run partnership for the fourth wicket.

At once stage, they were 121 runs for 7 wickets but an unbeaten 42-run partnership between Sachithra Senanayake (23) and Milinda Siriwardene (30) saw them finish day three on 163 runs for 7 wickets. Right arm speedsters Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara picked up 3 wickets each for Kandy team.
