The 6th indoor sports carnival in UAE comes to a grand end

The 6th edition of the Indoor Sports Carnival organized by the Old Boys Union of St. Peter’s College in the UAE was concluded on the 19th of May 2017 at the Insportz Indoor Stadium in Al Quoz Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The glamorous event brought together eight girls’ schools namely Alethea International School, Good Shepherd Convent Kotahena, Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya, Holy Family Convent Dehiwala, Ladies’ College, Methodist College, Musaeus College and St. Joseph’s Convent Nugegoda and 18 boys’ schools namely D S Senanayake College, Isipathana College, Lumbini College, Maliyadeva MMV, Royal College, St. Anthony’s College Katugasthota, St. Anthony’s College Wattala, St. Benedict’s College Kotahena, St. Joseph’s College Maradana, St. Sebastian’s College Kandana, St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa, S. Thomas’ College Mt Lavinia, T B Jaya, Wesley College, Zahira College Colombo, Zahira College Gampola, Zahira College Mawanella and hosts St. Peter’s College. The tournament also gave the opportunity to Sri Lankan students both past and present to showcase their talents through a combined team (UAE Schools).

The ladies’ challenge was in Badminton and Netball whilst the men battled it out in Badminton, Basketball, Soccer, Tag Rugby and Cricket.

RESULTS:

The ladies from Althea International School emerged champs in Badminton defeating a much fancied team from the UAE schools. Liandra De Almeida, representing the UAE schools, was adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament. In Netball the gutsy ladies from St. Joseph’s Convent Nugegoda turned up victorious in the final over Holy Family Convent Dehiwala; Pamela Mutukrishna from St. Joseph’s Convent was adjudged most valuable player of the tournament.

In the Men’s badminton challenge St. Anthony’s College Katugasthota defeated the Peterites emerging champs for the second consecutive year. Azar Shafeek from St. Anthony’s was adjudged the most valuable player. The Basketball tournament saw St. Anthony’s College Wattala overcome defending champs St. Peter’s College in the final; R D Malintha Shamal from St. Anthony’s was adjudged the most valuable player. In Soccer the Peterite team emerged champs after being runners up for five consecutive years defeating the much fancied Zahirians from Mawanalla; Peterite Irshard Hashimdeen was awarded the most valuable player trophy.

St. Benedicts College gained superiority over Wesley College in the Tag Rugby final; Shamal Suraweera of St. Benedicts College was the most valuable player.

Zahira Mawanalla claimed the Cricket Trophy for the second consecutive year defeating St. Benedict’s College in the Finals, Abdul Halik Mohamed Razik from Zahira Mawanella was the most valuable Cricketer of the day.

This Annual event was patronized by a record breaking turnout of over 1200 Sri Lankan expatriates residing in the United Arab Emirates. The Sri Lankan Counselor General Mr. Charitha Yattogoda also attended the event as the Guest of Honor and the Rector of St. Peter’s College Rev Fr. Trevor Martin travelled to Dubai to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.
