With the 92nd Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletic Championship 2024 commencing in full swing, the second day of this competition, (held on October 1st), was as exciting as the first. The Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo was made vibrant with several records too, allowing these young athletes to shine as not only new competition records were set, but also a new national record too.
Among these achievements, S.M.V.S. Rajakaruna from St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, set a new national record in the Under-18 200 meters event, clocking a time of 21.52 seconds.
Additionally, H.W.N. Wiladdara from Rahula College, Matara, set a new competition record in the Under-16 Boys’ 800 meters, finishing in 1 minute 58.49 seconds.
Similarly, M.G.T. Abhisheka from Wickramabahu Central College, Gampola, also set a new competition record in the Under-18 Girls’ 800 meters, completing the event in 2 minutes 10.15 seconds.

This was followed by the stellar performance of H.D.S. Avishka from Dammissara College, Nattandiya, who broke another competition record in the Under-18 Boys’ 800 meters, with a time of 1 minute 53.66 seconds.
In the field events, W.K.B.B. Saheli from Ave Maria Convent, Negombo, set a new competition record in the Under-16 Girls’ javelin throw, with a distance of 40.01 meters.
Finally, Ayomal Akalanka from Ambagamuwa Central College, Hatton, set a new competition record in the Under-20 Boys’ 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 52.14 seconds. These records are nothing short of brilliant and display the potential of the younger generation of athletes.
