The joint-defending league champions in the U19 Schools Cricket arena, St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya registered their first victory in the current 2016/17 season when they annihilated St. Anthony’s College, Wattala by an innings and 131 runs in their group ‘A’ encounter at Bambalapitiya.

After posting a mammoth first-innings score of 339, the Peterites clinically wiped off the Anthonians with a fine bowling performance. Fast-bowler Santhush Gunathilake was the star for the hosts’ with the ball taking a 7-wicket match bag while off-spinner Chathura Obeysekara and left-arm spinner Miflal Ameen contributed immensely to the cause.

St. Peter’s College – 339/6 declared in 53 overs: Lakshina Rodrigo 82, Manelkar De Silva 71, Ranmith Jayasena 69*, Anishka Perera 58, Arinda Chathuranga 2/63.

St. Joseph’s College vs St. Servatius’ College, Matara

St. Joseph’s College were deprived of an outright victory by a brave knock by Muditha Hashan of St. Servatius’ College in their ‘Singer Trophy’ under 19 schools ‘group D’ encounter at Darley Road.

Wicket-keeper batsman Hashan made an unbeaten 96 off 131 balls with 20 fours to save the game for the visitors in their second innings as they ended up on 174 for 8 in 57 overs.

Earlier in the morning session, after resuming from 60 for 6, the lads from Matara were bowled out for 84 by the Josephians.

The home team started their second innings with a lead of 64 and went on to score 173 for 8. Sri Lanka U19 cap, Jehan Daniel smashed 7 fours and 4 sixes during a captivating knock of 76 while his fellow Sri Lanka U19 team mate, Thilan Prashan picked up 3 scalps.

In chase of 238 runs for an outright win, St. Servatius’ College was troubled by the left-arm spin of skipper Harin Cooray who picked up his third five-wicket haul for the season.

Trinity College vs Dharamapala College, Pannipitiya

Trinity College, Kandy had to be satisfied with only a first-innings win over Dharamapala College, Pannipitiya in their ‘Singer Trophy’ under 19 schools ‘group A’ encounter at Pannipitiya.

Skipper Sanogeeth Shanmuganathan excelled for the Trinitians taking a 8-wicket match bag and scoring 30 runs but they could not inflict an outright loss to the struggling Palians. Before this game, the boys from Pannipitiya lost all their previous five games on outright.

After bowling out the hosts for 113, Trinity College managed only 127 in their first innings gaining a slim lead of 14 runs. The home team in their second innings put up a stunning effort of 168 for 8 in 45 overs thanks to a cracking 76 from Avishka Hasarindu. The visitors were 44 for 3 in chase of an impossible 155 runs from 9 overs.

Dharmapala College – 113 all out in 42 overs: Avishka Hasarinda 27, Mahima Weerakoon 25, Gihan Perera 16, Sanogeeth Shanmuganathan 6/45, Vimukthi Nethumal 2/09.

St. Sebastian’s College vs Dharmaraja College, Kandy

The joint-defending champions from the 2015/16 season, St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa registered a first-innings win over Dharmaraja College, Kandy in their season opener, group ‘A’ encounter at Moratuwa.

Skipper Deshan Gunasinghe made valiant knocks of 35 and 54 to save the Rajans after the home team enforced the follow-on after restricting the visitors to 182 in reply to their first-innings score of 295. Left-arm spinner, Praveen Jayawickrama was the pick of the bowlers for the Sebastianites taking 4 for 45 in the first innings.

Zahira College vs Bandaranayake College, Gampaha

Right-handed top order batsman Sajith Sameera’s valiant 108 went in vain as Bandaranayake College, Gampaha recorded a thrilling 23-run win over Zahira College in their under 19 division one traditional fixture worked out at Maradana.

Sameera picked up 8 wickets in the match to help Zahira give a chance of recording a stunning win after they were bowled out for a pathetic 65 in their first innings. Wicket-keeper batsman and captain of the side, Sasiri Adikari, all-rounder Sisitha Madanayake were the top performers for the visitors.
