St. Joseph’s College retain Rector’s Trophy

St. Joseph’s College got their U19 schools’ cricket season 2017/18 to a flying start when they crushed hapless St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna by 312 runs at Darley Road.

With this comfortable win, the Josephians retained the Rector’s Trophy. They won the inaugural match last year in Jaffna under Harin Cooray’s leadership.

After gaining a 247-run first innings lead, the hosts did not enforce the follow-on but opted to bat 35 overs and score 140 runs and set a daunting target of 388 for the visitors. Right-handed Shevaan Rassool made an unbeaten 56 for the Josephians while D Deluxsan and G Ratheeshan picked up 2 wickets.

In the fourth innings, St. Patrick’s batsmen found off-spinner Ashain Daniel tough to handle as he captured a 7-wicket haul to annihilate the visitors to only 75.

Earlier on day one, the home team made 285 for 8 before declaring their innings and the visitors were bundled out for 38 runs.

Daniel, playing his maiden first-class match captured 12 wickets for the match to walk away with the player of the match award.
