Records tumble as England sweep Sri Lanka T20Is

England Women tour of Sri Lanka 2019

267

England registered the highest T20I score in Women’s cricket in Sri Lanka at the P Sara Oval earlier today, to win the 3rd and finally match of the series against the hosts 3-0.

On course to 204, England’s Amy Jones, Danny Wyatt, Tammy Beaumont and Natalie Sciver all went passed the 40-run mark – the first time 4 players had crossed the mark in one innings in a Women’s T20I.

8-wicket loss sees Sri Lanka lose T20I series

Sri Lanka Women suffered another ….

The toss was the only thing that has gone right for Sri Lanka all series, but it hasn’t mattered whether they’ve batted or bowled – with them losing all three games comprehensively to England, ranked no. 2 in the world.

Sri Lanka’s Chamari Atapattu put the visitors into bat and it was carnage right from the get go as Wyatt and Jones got them off to a blistering start. The pair added 96 for the 1st wicket, smashing 12 fours and 3 sixes along the way. Wyatt fell shortly after the 10th over for 51 and Jones, who had a magnificent ODI series but hasn’t really cashed in in the T20Is, went to her 4th half-century on tour with a big 6 off spinner Shashikala Siriwardene before being dismissed a couple of overs later. Off-spinner Oshadi Ranasinghe picked up both wickets.

More pain was to follow for the Sri Lanka bowlers however as 1st drop Tammy Beaumont and Natalie Sciver plundered 92 runs in the last 7 overs to finish with 204 – England’s 2nd highest T20I score in Women’s cricket. Sciver blasted 49 off just 25 deliveries, including 10 boundaries, while Beaumont made 42 in 24 deliveries.

With a mountain to climb, the match was all but done and dusted when the hosts’ skipper Atapattu was dismissed in the 3rd over of the innings by Freya Davies. From that point onwards it became a matter of sticking around at the crease and they managed to do so for the loss of 6 wickets, small consolation after the 96-run defeat.

Right hander Hansima Karunaratne has showed glimpses of her ability throughout the series and was unbeaten on 44 at the end of the innings, the only bit of positivity to take out of Sri Lanka’s innings.

The victory also took England to their 10th straight win across formats.
