Kerr, Devine partnership helps White Ferns crush Sri Lanka and tie series

New Zealand Women Tour of Sri Lanka 2023

240

Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine both scored tons as New Zealand Women beat Sri Lanka Women by a whopping 116 runs in the 2nd ODI of their 3-match series, to level things at 1-1.

New Zealand skipper Devine won the toss and opted to have a bat once again, looking to make the most of the batting friendly conditions at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Suzie Bates was dismissed early before Bernadine Beizudenhout and Amelia Kerr put together 50 for the 2nd wicket. The best was yet to come for the visitors after the dismissal of Beizudenhout, as Kerr and Devine combined for 229 off 199, a record partnership for the Ferns against Sri Lanka.

The pair played the game perfectly, looking to make the most of the plentiful loose deliveries on offer while also continuing to rotate strike. Kerr went to her century first, her 3rd in ODIs, before Devine struck a boundary to reach her 7th and first against Sri Lanka. Devine cut loose before she was dismissed for 137 but the Ferns fell away from then on, finishing with 329, whereas they looked like they were heading towards 350 when Kerr and Devine were in.

The visitors were also hit with a five-run penalty for running on the pitch and were penalized once again when they were bowling, where umpires once again awarded Sri Lanka 5 penalty runs for Lea Tahuhu repeatedly treading on the danger area, a decision which was rescinded post-game

Sri Lanka surprisingly came into the chase with Harshitha Samarawickrama and Vishmi Gunaratne, with skipper Chamari Athapaththu batting at 3. Lea Tahuhu didn’t open the bowling but struck as soon as she was brought into the attack, dismissing both Gunaratne and Athapaththu off consecutive deliveries.

Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshi de Silva fell with the score on 34, more or less ending Sri Lanka’s chances of getting close to New Zealand’s total. Kaveesh Dilhari stuck around to score her 1st half century in ODIs but Sri Lanka ultimately ended 116 short. However, they will take heart with this being the 1st time they crossed 200 against the Ferns in ODIs.
