Bangladesh U19‘s tour of Sri Lanka 2018 begins tomorrow (16th October) with the 1st youth test getting underway at the NCC Grounds, Colombo.

After finishing the Asia Cup on a high note, the next objective for the junior unit of Sri Lanka cricket is the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. With most of the other nations already into the campaign, this series against Bangladesh will mark a technical start to the preparations for Sri Lanka. Bangladesh has also flown in a set of youngsters with the World Cup on their minds. Hence, the contest is going to be even and exciting.

The Sri Lanka U19 team is lead by the left-handed batsman, Nipun Dhanajaya, of St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa. This will mark his 3rd series as the captain which includes a splendid Asia Cup campaign.

“Our team is in a good state of mind. They are a very good team and we met them in the Asia Cup too. There are some new inclusions to our team. Along with them, we have been practising hard these days. (I am) hoping to perform well in this tournament”, said the skipper, addressing the press at the pre-series press conference.

Sri Lanka U19 squad announced for Bangladesh Youth Tests

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have named a 16-member squad for the upcoming two-match Youth Test series against Bangladesh U19s….

Bangladesh will be lead by Tawhid Hirdoy, who lead them in the Asia Cup too. Hirdoy said that the series will be very crucial for Bangladesh in the build-up to the World Cup.

“First of all, thanks to Sri Lanka Cricket for organizing such a tour. Our main aim is the 2020 World Cup. This tour will be very crucial to us on our way to that aim.” – Thawid Hirdoy.

The tour also takes up some interest in the coaching department as the two teams are being coached by former teammates Hashan Tillakaratne and Naveed Nawaz. Nawaz was also a former Sri Lanka U19 coach. He is now heading the Bangladesh U19 coaching team and this will be his first tour with the team.

“I have coached Sri Lanka U19 for 3 World Cups. I took up the Bangladesh U19 team two months ago. Just as Tawhid said, we have selected a team with the World Cup in mind. We fielded the same team in the Asia Cup too. The major requirement of the Bangladesh Cricket Board is to produce players to the senior team right from the Under-19. Accordingly, we look forward to gather up some good players for the World Cup and perform well there.” – Naweed Nawaz

Hashan Tillakaratne too had similar ideas regarding the upcoming World Cup. “Following the Asia Cup, many new faces have come into the squad. All the members in this squad are eligible to play in the 2020 World Cup”, said Head Coach Hashan Tillakaratne. The coach is very excited about the new members of the squad and is looking for some new findings for the future.
