Sri Lanka skittled out for 169 as West Indies take control on Day 01

Sri Lanka vs West Indies, 1st Test, Day 01

Sri Lanka tour of West Indies, 2021

Speedster Jason Holder picked up an excellent 5-wicket haul with the ball as West Indies skittled out Sri Lanka for just 169 runs on day one of the first Test match between the two sides commenced yesterday (21st March) at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

West Indies’ skipper Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and invited the visitors to take the first lease of the wicket. The 22-year old Pathum Nissanka was handed his maiden Test cap for Sri Lanka and he became the 155th Test cricketer to represent the country.

The skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne opened the innings for Sri Lanka but after seeing off the new ball in first 10 overs, Karunaratne threw his wicket away for 12 runs to the off spinner Rahkeem Cornwall.

In the 16th over of the innings, Oshada Fernando was undone by some brilliant fielding from the opposition skipper Brathwaite for just 4 runs. The number four batsman Chandimal too didn’t stay at the crease for long as he fell to the last ball of the first session after making just 4 runs off 25 balls.

Dhananjaya de Silva who came to bat number 5 looked good in post-lunch but a peach of a delivery from Kemar Roach dismissed him for 13 runs. The debutant Nissanka didn’t have the greatest of starts as he fell for just 9 runs leaving Sri Lanka reelin at 92 for 5.

Niroshan Dickwella and set batsman Thirimanne stabilized things for Sri Lanka for a while building a 58-run partnership for the seventh wicket before Dickwella threw his wicket away as well.

After Dickwella’s dismissal, there was no significant contribution with the bat from Sri Lanka’s tale as they were shot out for 169 runs in 69.4 overs. Thirimanne top scored for the visitors with a fighting knock of 70 runs off 180 balls with 4 fours.

In reply, the skipper Brathwaite and John Campbell opened the innings for the hosts and they were very watchful with the bat as they scored just 13 runs in the 13 overs they batted together.
