Dane Paterson claimed his maiden Test five-wicket haul to restrict Sri Lanka’s first innings, leaving them behind South Africa. The hosts then extended their lead to 221 with seven wickets in hand at the close of an eventful day three of the second and final Test in Gqeberha.
Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram gave South Africa a solid start in their second innings, adding 55 runs for the opening stand. de Zorzi, who has struggled in this series, was bowled by a beauty from Prabath Jayasuriya for 19, with the ball pitching outside off and hitting the stumps.
Markram, after getting another start, managed to convert it into his 12th Test fifty. He steadied the innings alongside Ryan Rickelton, edging closer to another fifty-run stand. However, Vishwa Fernando broke through, tempting Markram into a drive off a full and wide delivery, with Kusal Mendis taking a brilliant one-handed catch off the edge. Jayasuriya then struck again, trapping first-innings centurion Rickelton LBW, leaving South Africa at 109/3.
From there, Tristan Stubbs and skipper Temba Bavuma took control, adding an unbroken 82-run partnership to guide South Africa to 191/3 at stumps. Bavuma remains on course for his fourth fifty of the series as the Proteas head into day four in a strong position.
Earlier, Sri Lanka seemed poised to take a first-innings lead after finishing day two strongly at 242/3. However, South African pacers turned the tide in the morning session, reducing the visitors to 298 for 8, dismissing all four remaining recognized batters.
Overnight pair Angelo Mathews and Kamindu Mendis could only extend their partnership from 43 to 61 runs this morning. Marco Jansen struck first, bowling a short-of-length delivery that produced extra bounce, clipping Mathews’ bottom glove and carrying safely to the keeper. Mathews departed for 44.
Just three balls after taking the second new ball, Jansen struck again, removing Kamindu, who edged to slip, also falling short of a half-century. Then Paterson produced a sensational over, snaring three wickets to put South Africa firmly in control. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva was caught in the cordon, Kusal Mendis chopped a poor leave onto his stumps after surviving three earlier chances, and Lahiru Kumara fell to a one-handed screamer by Jansen at gully.
After a brief 29-run stand with Jayasuriya, Vishwa fell to Paterson, who secured his maiden Test five-wicket haul. Jayasuriya chipped in with a useful 24 before being stumped off Keshav Maharaj, as Sri Lanka were bowled out with a 30-run deficit.
