Kyle Verreynne’s third Test century powered South Africa to 358 in their first innings, but Pathum Nissanka classy 89 helped Sri Lanka take control of the game in the final two sessions. The visitors trailed by just 116 runs at stumps on day two of the second Test in Gqeberha.
After Sri Lanka’s innings began, Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne successfully navigated the tricky early period and saw off the new ball. The former looked solid at the crease, while the latter found a few boundaries. However, extra bounce from Kagiso Rabada proved decisive as Karunaratne nicked one to the keeper, departing for 17 as the first wicket fell at 41.
Rabada also created a chance to dismiss Nissanka on 22, but David Bedingham put down a thick outside edge at first slip despite having two or three attempts to hold on.
Nissanka then steadied the innings alongside Dinesh Chandimal, forging a superb 109-run partnership for the second wicket—the first century stand for Sri Lanka’s second wicket in South Africa. However, the stand was broken by Dane Paterson, who found Chandimal’s edge, with the catch easily taken by the keeper. Chandimal fell six runs short of a hard-fought fifty.
Nissanka, capitalizing on the early dropped chance, continued to accumulate runs. The opener seemed set for a hundred, but his hard work came undone when he misjudged a slog sweep off Keshav Maharaj, the ball crashing into off-stump. Nissanka departed for 89 off 157 balls, compiling with 11 fours and a six, after adding a 49-run stand with Angelo Mathews.

Mathews and Kamindu Mendis then batted with patience, ensuring no further damage before the close of play. Mathews, who became third Sri Lankan to reach 8000 Test runs, was approaching a fifty, while Kamindu’s quick scoring took Sri Lanka to 242 for 3.
Earlier today, Sri Lanka began day two on a high with just three wickets remaining to wrap up South Africa’s first innings. Vishwa Fernando struck early, dismissing Maharaj for a duck with a straightforward catch at slip, as the batter hesitated in his shot selection.
However, the last two wickets didn’t come easily for the visitors. Overnight batter Kyle Verreynne reached a well-deserved half-century and built a crucial 56-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Rabada. The No. 10 batter chipped in with a handy 23 runs before being bowled by Asitha Fernando.
After Rabada’s dismissal, Verreynne shifted gears, bringing up his third Test century in style. He continued to frustrate the Lankan bowlers, adding vital runs with Paterson in an 11th-wicket stand. Paterson eventually fell to Lahiru Kumara, thanks to a sharp catch by Kamindu Mendis.
