Danushka, Bhanuka, Pathum and Dushmantha shine in selection game

Sri Lanka Cricket conducted a T20 game today at SSC Grounds, Colombo to pick their final squad for the forthcoming West Indies tour. Several players put their hands up with noteworthy performances as Dasun Shanaka and Isuru Udana captained the two teams.

Udana’s XI were asked to bat first and his two openers, Niroshan Dickwella and Oshada Fernando got their side off to a decent start with both scoring 15 each. With the fall of the first wicket, Bhanuka Rajapaksa walked in and top-scored for Udana’s XI with a blistering 50 off 28 balls with 4 massive sixes and 5 fours. Experienced campaigner Angelo Mathews made a run-a-ball 30 to provide vital support to Rajapaksa. 

However, Shanaka’s XI dominated with the ball towards the latter part of the innings as seamer Dushmantha Chameera bowled an impressive spell taking 3 wickets. Akila Dananjaya, Nuwan Pradeep and Wanindu Hasaranga took two wickets apiece as Udana’s XI were bowled out for 143 in the final over of their innings after being 90 for 2 in 11 overs.

Chasing 144 runs to win, uncapped Pathum Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka opened the batting for Shanaka’s XI. The left-hand and right-hand combination worked fine as they cruised to victory in the 17th over. Nissanka made a solid 40 off 38 balls with 4 fours, while Gunathilake remained unbeaten till the end smashing 82 off 55 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. 

Only the players who passed the recent 2-km fitness Test participated in this selection game. The new selection committee which will be announced by the Sports Minister in a couple of days will pick their maiden squad before the end of the week. 

The extended touring squad will leave the island on the 23rd February with Sri Lanka scheduled to play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests in Antigua against the hosts, West Indies.
