Former Test captain Sanath Jayasuriya is likely to take over as the new Chairman of Selectors, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sources told The Island.

After current selection chief Aravinda de Silva declined to extend his term, SLC was head-hunting for a replacement and although talks were held with several former players, Jayasuriya has emerged as the front-runner.

Both Aravinda and Kumar Sangakkara accepted their positions in a short term basis and their terms expired after the World T-20. The new selectors’ immediate task will be to pick the side for the upcoming tour of England.

Jayasuriya, whose international career spanned for well over two decades, brings in a wealth of experience and his deep knowledge will be beneficial to a team that’s in transition.

Earlier, Jayasuriya had a two year stint as Chairman of Selectors ending with the 2015 World Cup. He headed the selection panel when Sri Lanka won the World T-20 beating India in the finals in 2014.
