Air Force conquer the Sri Lanka Rugby 7’s

Air Force sports club clinched the club sevens title by defeating Havelocks sports club 24 points to 12 in the cup final of the Sri Lanka sevens competition held today at Race course grounds, Colombo. Army Sports Club won the women’s title while Western Province took home the provincial segment.

Day 02 of the Sri Lanka Sevens competition kicked off with the quarterfinals of the provincial segment while the club segment quarterfinals followed.

Provincial segment

Western Province continued their dominance in the provincial segment as they won the provincial segment by beating the Sabaragamuwa province team 20 points to nil.

Club Segment

The club quarterfinals were mostly one-sided affairs but the CR & FC and Navy game was the spotlight as the Navy came back from behind to win the game in the last move which broke all the hopes of the strong CR outfit as they had to move towards the Bowl Segment.

CR & FC won the bowl by beating Police in the semi-final by 12 points 05 and later on, they hammered the Navy Blues 34 points to nil in the final.

The cup semifinal showcased some high-quality rugby with Air Force beating Navy in a close tussle and Havelocks beating the highflying Army team who were unbeaten up to this game.

In the Women’s segment, Army and Navy won the respective semifinal games comfortably and the CR & FC team won 3rd Place in this competition. In the finals Army, women were too strong for Navy as they sealed the women’s segment.

The Best player award for the club Women’s segment was awarded to Chamodya Madumali of Army SC.

The Plate final took place between the losing cup semifinalist and Navy Shocked Army by defeating them 26 points to 10.

Cup Final

Air Force came in as firm favorites as they dominated all their games but Havelocks opened the scoring through their playmaker Mithun Hapugoda as he made a delicate chip kick, he managed to collect it by himself and went over to put on the pressure towards Airforce.

Air Force responded immediately through their big man Shashika Fernando as he stroll over the line to tie the game.

Havelocks were then caught napping by the airmen as Avishka Lee collected a loose ball from a havies knock forward and scored an important try.

The second half brought some luck to the air force as they scored two quick tries to inch closer to the title.

Veteran Gayantha Iddamalgoda run around the Havies defense to score the first while Nuwan Perera collected a kick and chase and went over the whitewash to seal the game.

Ramesh Fernando scored a consolation try just before the long whistle for havies as Air Force was crowned the Sri Lanka Sevens champions.
